FAQ

What counts as "commercial use"?

Any for-profit use qualifies. This includes: company employees using Aether at work, integrating Aether into a paid product, using Aether to deliver consulting to clients, using Aether's output in commercial projects. Personal learning / research / hobby / nonprofit / academic use does NOT qualify.

I'm a solo freelancer. Does contract work count?

Yes. If the ultimate output serves a for-profit purpose (even just you), it's commercial use. But case-by-case — WeChat the author. Commercial license fees for solo freelancers are far lower than enterprise.

When will there be a paid tier?

Not before Day 30. This is a 30-day public experiment. The target is "1 unaffiliated dev stars on GitHub · or 5 manually-invited devs try it" (see scope reaffirmation). Either one met = Day 30+ continuation · else archive. A paid tier only gets built when real commercial demand materializes — not pre-built.

Will Aether stop being open?

No. Core code stays under PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 forever. Free for non-commercial is a hard commitment. Commercial licensing is a separate channel · doesn't affect non-commercial forks.

Can I fork / rename / continue development?

Yes, as long as: ① non-commercial purpose · ② preserve the LICENSE file + Required Notice: Copyright 2026 wsl497810 line. You CANNOT: ① rename and commercialize · ② remove author attribution · ③ assert patent claims against Aether from your fork (Patent Defense clause).
